Assessment of the Correlation Between Inflammatory Status and Severity of COVID-19: Experience from Tertiary Hospital in Iraq
Curr Microbiol. 2023 Jul 14;80(9):283. doi: 10.1007/s00284-023-03407-9.ABSTRACTAs COVID-19 pandemic has strikingly hit the health systems of many countries, thus, the assessment of disease severity and its correlation with clinical and biochemical markers has become a necessity. These predictors can help in the diagnostics and therapeutics of COVID_19 and future viral respiratory tract infections. This was a cross-sectional study to assess the association between inflammatory makers and chronic conditions on computed tomography (CT) severity score, and D-dimer as a surrogate marker of disease severity. The results showed t...

Optimizing needle length and site choice for adult immunization
CONCLUSIONS: The overall ideal injection site to maximize successful intramuscular vaccine administration, minimize overpenetration, and avoid axillary nerve injury is 4 cm distal to and in line with the posterolateral corner of the acromion, a site more posterior and inferior than current CDC recommendations. We caution against use of a 1.5″ needle for patients < 118 kg due to high predicted rates of overpenetration.PMID:37365058 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.06.031

Comparison of the local safety of two multi-component feline vaccines, adjuvanted (1  mL) versus non-adjuvanted at reduced volume (0.5 mL), using computed tomography imaging
The objectives of this study were to investigate the local safety of this non-adjuvanted vaccine at reduced volume by classical methods (clinical examination, histopathology) and to evaluate the suitability of an alternative non-invasive methodology, the computed tomography (CT). For this purpose, the course of local reactions was assessed for 3 months after subcutaneous injection of PUREVAX® RCP FeLV 0.5 mL and compared to an adjuvanted vaccine, LEUCOFELIGEN® FeLV/RCP 1.0 mL. Injection site reactions consisted mainly of swelling reactions, which were more frequent, more pronounced and long-lasting in the adjuvanted vacc...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, June 19th 2023
In conclusion, among Swedish middle-aged subjects, nearly two-thirds showed complete fatty degeneration of thymus on CT. Age-Related Dysfunction of Water Homeostasis https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2023/06/age-related-dysfunction-of-water-homeostasis/ Dehydration can be an issue in older people. As in every complex system in the body, the mechanisms by which hydration is regulated become dysfunctional with advancing age. Researchers here look at the brain region responsible for regulating some of the response to dehydration, cataloging altered gene expression in search of the more important mechani...

Retropharyngeal Abscess With Mediastinal Extension: A Case Series and Review of the Literature
We present 3 cases of retropharyngeal abscess with mediastinal extension in infants. In one case, an incompletely vaccinated 10-month-old boy presented with cough, rhinorrhea, and fever. Despite antibiotic treatment, he developed Horner's syndrome and hypoxia. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed a C1-T7 retropharyngeal abscess. He underwent transoral incision and drainage and recovered fully. In another case, a 12-month old infant presented with 8 days of fever and neck pain. A CT scan showed a retropharyngeal collection extending to the mediastinum and right hemithorax. Transoral incision and drainage and video-assiste...

Necrotizing pancreatitis, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia following the second dose of Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 mRNA vaccine
We report a 31-year-old female with a history of borderline personality disorder, intravenous drug abuse, allergic asthma, eating disorder, psoriatic arthritis treated with tofacitinib, neurogenic bladder disturbance, cholecystectomy, recurrent thoracic herpes zoster, vaginal candida infections and urinary tract infections, who developed pancreatitis associated with thrombotic microangiopathy and hemolytic-uremic syndrome 10 days after the second vaccination, whereas the first has been well tolerated. She was treated by plasma exchange, and eventually by transgastric drainage with implantation of a plastic stent to remove ...

Colonic Perforation Secondary to COVID-19 Induced Hemorrhagic Colitis in a Patient Heterozygous for Factor V Leiden
Am Surg. 2023 May 4:31348231173976. doi: 10.1177/00031348231173976. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUp to 17.6% of COVID-19 positive patients present with gastrointestinal symptoms and bowel wall abnormalities have been described in up to 31% of COVID-19 positive patients. Here, we present a case of a 40-year-old male diagnosed with COVID-19 complicated by hemorrhagic colitis leading to colonic perforation. CT scan of abdomen and pelvis demonstrated markedly distended descending and sigmoid colon with poorly defined wall, pneumatosis, and pneumoperitoneum. The patient was taken for emergent exploratory laparotomy for extende...

A Phase I/II trial of HER-2/neu vaccine primed autologous T-cell infusions in patients with treatment refractory HER-2/neu overexpressing breast cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Adoptive transfer of HER2 vaccine primed T-cells was feasible, associated with minimal toxicity, and resulted in an increased overall survival in responding patients.PMID:37093223 | DOI:10.1158/1078-0432.CCR-22-3578
